NMC issues regulations for NExT, all FAQs answered— eligibility, attempts, 10-year rule

The National Medical Commission (NMC) recently issued guidelines for NExT. Let’s check some of the frequently asked questions:
What is NExT exam for?
The National Exit Test (NExT) will be conducted to certify the eligibility of medical graduates to register to practice the modern system of medicine in India. It will serve as a licentiate exam.
It will also determine the eligibility and rank of candidates for admission to postgraduate medical courses and serve as an entrance exam to postgraduate medical education courses in India.
Is NExT exam 2023 confirmed?
The NExT is scheduled to begin with the batch passing out in 2024. A mock test will be conducted by AIIMS Delhi on July 10, the registration process for the same is underway and will close on July 10.
Nearly 1 lakh students are expected to appear for the mock test. Centres will be set up across the country for the computer-based test (CBT). The registration fees for the mock test is Rs 2,000 for open and OBC category students, Rs 1,000 for SC, ST, EWS category students, while there isn’t any fee for students under PwBD category.
Who is eligible for NExT exam?
NExT shall be undertaken by all undergraduate medical students pursuing MBBS in all medical colleges approved by NMC including Institutes of National Importance (INI).
All Foreign Medical Graduates (FMG) who fulfil the requirement of foreign medical graduate licentiate regulation by NMC for the purpose of obtaining a licence of practicing medicine in India as a registered medical practitioner and for enrollement in the state or national register.
Any person with a medical degree to pursue an academic course, observership or any other purpose specified by NMC through due notification. All those who have been granted medical licence to practice and registered in the national or state register and wish to pursue postgraduate courses in broad specialities.
How many attempts are there in NExT exam?
As per the official notification, “There is no restriction to the number of attempts to appear in NExT Step 1 provided the candidate has passed both NExT Step 1 and NExT Step 2 Examination within 10 years of joining the MBBS Course. There is no restriction to the number of attempts to appear in the NExT Step 1 Examination to improve scores provided these examinations for improvement of scores are taken after completion of NExT Step 2. Candidates are not entitled to appear in NExT step 1 for improvement of score till completion of NExT 2.”
How long is the NExT 1 exam valid?
The NExT step 1 scores for determining merit for admission to broad specialty postgraduate courses shall remain valid for five years. However, if a candidate appears in exam cycle of NExT step 1 again, then the previous NExT step 1 scores would be invalid for determination of rank for admission to postgraduate courses in broad specialties and only the scores acquired in the last attempt of NExT step will be considered.
What is the 10 year rule for NExT exam?
Students who have completed their III MBBS/ Final MBBS course from NMC approved/recognised medical college will have to appear for NExT step 1. Once they have cleared that, they will have to do an internship after which they can appear for NExT step 2. As per the regulations, candidates have to clear NExT (step 1 and 2) within 10 years of joining the MBBS course.
